Penis Enlargement and Reality – Top Myths about the Male Penis

Throughout the years, many myths about the penis and men’s sexuality in general have clouded the truth and challenged the facts.  Today, myths and misconceptions about the penis abound, causing confusion and misunderstanding.  Some of the myths about the penis include those about penis size, sexual activity, and the “normal penis.” The main problem of such myths is that they cause stress, anxiety, or even insecurity amongst men by misleading them with false claims and fabricated lies.(1)  This article will delve into the top five myths about the penis and give some insight into the truth.

Penis Myth 1 – Bigger is better.

One of the most prevalent myths about the male penis is that bigger is better.  Among men, this is probably the most well-known myth, especially considering that guys sometimes tease or insult each other about being small in size.  The penis is a symbol of male sexuality, machismo, and masculinity, which is why size is often fussed over among men.  The immature notion that a larger penis equates to someone who is more masculine has led men to think or feel that bigger is better.  Because the “bigger is better” myth has become so prevalent, some men are insecure about their penis size.  Studies show that many men with average-sized penises actually think that their penis is too small.(2)

The truth is, a larger penis does not equate to being more masculine or macho, despite what other people may say or what the media may allude to.(4)  Certainly, having a larger penis may dispel some insecurities or worries about one’s own penis size, but there is no scientific evidence that proves bigger is indeed better.  As long as you are confident in your manliness and in who you are as a person, your penis size shouldn’t matter.  So stop buying into this widespread myth.

Myth 2 – Size matters.

Another myth that is closely related to the first is that size matters when it comes to the bedroom.  Because of the skewed perception that the media and pornography present, many people have been tricked into believing that women like large penises when it comes to sexual intercourse.(3)  The size matters myth, as well as the bigger is better myth, have contributed to the growing industry of penis enlargement products and methods.

In truth, size does not matter as much to women as it does to men.  In fact, some women claim that large penises cause a great deal of pain during sexual intercourse.  The truth is, sex should be viewed as more than just penetration.  There are many aspects of sexual intercourse and, ironically, penis size is just a small part of what it takes to have a wonderful sexual experience with your partner.(4)  It is the experience as a whole that must be taken into consideration, not just the penetration.  Penis size has little effect on the amount of pleasure that one feels during intercourse.  Instead of focusing on penis size, you may want to concentrate on making an intimate, emotional, physical, and mental connection with your partner.  By making her feel important, loved and cared for, instead of worrying about your size, you can give her the best and most pleasurable experience ever (regardless of your size).

Myth 3 – All penis enlargement methods work.

Another common myth about penises is that penis enlargement methods work.  The penis enlargement industry has become quite successful, because people actually believe that the numerous penis enlargement methods out there work.(5)  From pills and ointments to devices and surgery, men have tried numerous methods in an attempt to make their penises larger.  Essentially, there are two myths at work here.  First is the myth that a larger penis is better, and the second myth is that penis enlargement methods work.  The media has influenced society to think that men with larger penises are better off and, for some reason, many people actually believe it and look for ways to make their penis size
larger.(6)

The truth is that most penis enlargement products and methods don’t work at all.(7)  In some cases, such methods may increase penis size temporarily, but hardly any of them work permanently.  Perhaps the most successful penis enlargement method involves surgery, which is usually costly and inconvenient.  Some doctors, scientists, and researchers are still monitoring the effects, side-effects, problems, and general issues related to penis enlargement.  The truth is though, you were made precisely the way you are, so why try to ruin that by altering your body parts?

Myth 4 – Penis size is proportional to other body parts.

Many misconceptions have come about because of the myth that the size of certain body parts, such as the feet or hands, is proportional to penis size.  Basically, the myth is based on the premise that you can tell how big someone’s penis is by measuring their feet, hands, or nose.(8)  The truth is, there is no scientific proof that shows a correlation between body part size and penis size.  It is true, though, that certain genes that control the development of the limbs also control the development of the penis in the embryo stage.  Still, when it comes to fully developed males, there is no absolute relation between the size of the penis and the size of the limbs or other body parts.(9)

Myth 5 – Certain races have larger penises than others.

Finally, the fifth popular myth related to the penis is that certain races have larger penises than other races.  In most cases, this myth is based on the thought that African-Americans are well endowed, while Asians have smaller penises.(10)  Numerous studies have been carried out regarding race and penis size.  While some general truths were found, it is concluded by many professionals that the male penis comes in many different sizes, shapes, and forms in every race.  Besides, even if such a myth were proven true, why would it matter?  The myths of size have already been debunked above,(11) so a study like this would not matter much with regard to the function and use of the penis.

It can be hard to separate yourself from all of the stigma, misconception, and stereotypes that are related to such myths.  In fact, the media, Internet, and society in general often contribute to such myths by claiming that they are true or by blindly believing in them.  The truth is that the penis is just another part of the body and the male reproductive system.  Perpetuating such myths about the male penis will only lead to more insecurity, unease, and misunderstanding.(12)  The best thing you can do as a man is accept yourself and be confident in who you are.
